Film Studies Update

 In Film Studies

Welcome to week 9!

Last week discuss cinematography and spent the week talking about some of the best shots and lines in cinematic history. We look at the choices these directors make and begin to analyze the intended effect of using such techniques.

This week I wanted to show a very different film than most students are used to. We’re viewing Spirited Away directed by Hayao Miyazaki, an anime film that won the second ever Best Animated Picture in 2002. Made in 2001 by Studio Ghibli (the Pixar of Japan) it follows the tale of a young girl whose family is moving into a new house when the stop to explore an abandoned village when her parents undergo a mysterious transformation and she is whisked into a world of spirits ruled over by a sorceress. We’re watching the dubbed version so we don’t have to read subtitles while watching the movie and there are some distinct differences between an animated feature and a film that we’ll be discussing.
