Film Studies Update

 In Film Studies

Good afternoon and we’re on to week 5!

This past week we continued our study of the screenplay, shifting from the absurdly silly comedy that is Monty Python to a cinematic classic in Shrek. In viewing Shrek, we tried to analyze what type of film it is. The students identified elements of fantasy and fairy tale (the obvious two), but also satire, road trip, buddy team-up, hero’s journey. They also worked on identifying the different types of conflict.

We’re shifting gears a bit this week as we move away from the screenplay and begin to explore character and acting. We’ll discuss aspects of bad acting vs. poor casting, performances vs. imitation, our problems with actors, and how to create interesting, well-developed characters.

I’m apprehensive to start a new film this week with the half day on Wednesday and picture day on Tuesday. For films featuring amazingly well-written characters and acting I’m planning on showing Catch Me If You Can dir. Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio and O Brother Where Art Thou dir. Joel and Ethan Coen, starring George Clooney.

What’s new with Mr. Dudek?

Weekends are for the family. I usually like to spend individual time with my kiddos to make them feel special and this weekend was my son’s turn. After his volleyball game I took him out for a treat and we did movie night together. He got to pick this week and selected Godzilla, which he enjoyed.

Please reach out any time if need be.
Have a great week!
